What to Expect During a Same-Day Crown Appointment

Multiple dental visits for a tooth crown? No thanks.

Traditional crown procedures usually take more than two visits. First, your tooth is prepped, and a mold is taken.  Next, you wait weeks for a lab to make your crown–meanwhile, you roam with a temporary one, that doesn’t feel or look quite right.

Who has time for all that? Thankfully, same-day crowns have changed the game. Now, you can walk in and walk out with a permanent crown—all in a single visit. Here’s what the process looks like:

Shade matching

The process begins with selecting the correct crown color. Using a shade guide, the dental assistant will ensure the crown blends naturally with your existing teeth.

Numbing the area

Once the shade is matched, the dentist will numb the area so you can be comfortable and feel no discomfort during the procedure.

Scanning the tooth

Next, the dentist uses a digital scanner and CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Design/Manufacturing) software to scan the tooth. This step creates a precise 3D model to design your crown.

Bonus: You might even get to watch the scan being done live—it’s quick and pretty fascinating.

Tooth Prep And Laser Gum Treatment

Once scanned, the dentist removes any decay and shapes the tooth to fit the crown. A laser may be used to gently treat the gum line and minimize bleeding. A protective solution like Viscoat is also applied to control moisture.

Laser has helped speed up dental procedures with less bleeding and discomfort.

Crown Milling

The scanned design is sent to a special in-office milling machine. This unit carves your crown out of a ceramic block in about 15-20 minutes. It’s super precise and ensures a great fit.

Adjusting, polishing, and cementing

After milling, your dentist will place the milled crown on your tooth, and make any adjustments if needed. Then, the crown is polished to match the natural shade of your teeth.

Once everything looks fine and feels right, the crown is permanently cemented in place—no need to come back, all done in one visit.
