Dental Examination – How Often Should You Visit Your Dentist?

You should visit your dentist once a year.

For a long time, this rule of thumb was followed by millions who sought appropriate guidance for their dental health. However, according to a study, the process of annual dental visits is not adequate. This is because people fail to take preventative care of their oral health.

Although many do brush their and floss regularly, they fail to see how their other daily practices are harming their teeth in different ways. What’s worse; even for those who do visit the dentist, end up lying to their dentist about their dental health. According to a national survey, it was found that more than a quarter of US adults lied to their dentist about the number of times they flossed.

So What Should You Do?

Taking care of your gum and teeth health is important; however, since every person is different, the level of dental care always ends up varying. On average, seeing a dentist twice a year works well for the most part. However, there are a number of people and groups who could do with visits every three to four months such as:

  • Pregnant women
  • Diabetics
  • People with gum disease
  • People who have cavities or plaque build-up
  • People with weak immune response systems
  • Smokers

Also, another reason why it would be better to see your dentist is if you are ill or stressed. For instance, if you have a tooth ache, the reason could probably be a sinus toothache which can affect the upper back teeth.

Also, even though your dentist might not find any problems with during the visit, going for a simple checkup or even a cleaning will remind you to take care of your dental hygiene. Don’t think that just because you’re passed 18, you can get out of going to the dentist. While it is a fact that children need to go to the dentist more because they’re prone to teeth decay; adults suffer from various dental issues too; most of which can aggravate, if not cared for in a timely manner.

Dental appointments are important. And if you don’t know how often you should go, the best way is to ask your dentist yourself so they can give you a proper time frame for your dental visits. Here at Advanced Dental Center, we receive patients throughout the year who try to keep their gums and teeth in top condition, yet still make quarter-monthly appointments so as to keep an eye on their health.

So follow their example and book an appointment now. If you don’t have a dentist, give us a call at our Rockville Dental Center and get the care you need.
